Toronto, Ontario, Canada, January 14, 2002
Plitron Manufacturing Inc, Toronto, Canada is introducing a new clean power transformer technology, named NBT or "Narrow Bandwidth Technology."
Plitron "Narrow Bandwidth Technology" power transformers substantially attenuate differential and common-mode noises, eliminating the requirement for external circuits or components such as low pass filters.
Plitron NBT toroidal transformers provide harmonic cancellation on the power line beyond any specified frequency. Typical cut-off frequency exceeds the performance of most commercial filters, starting at 1 Khz (with no resonance effect) at a slope of 20 dB / decade to 70 dB at 500 Khz, and 50 dB at frequencies between 2 Mhz and 1 Ghz.
The technology is covered by patents in several countries. Technical papers are available as free downloads from Plitrons website.
NBT Transformers offer toroidal advantages
Plitron NBT transformers are built in toroidal shape, thus offering all the advantages of toroidal transformer technology.
Toroidal transformers offer higher efficiency, smaller physical size and weight, and provide less audible hum and lower stray fields compared to typical EI transformers of equivalent power rating. Toroidal transformers are the fastest growing component in the magnetics and transformer industry.
NBT eliminates need for additional components
Since the distortion is eliminated totally within the transformer, NBT transformers have the added bonus of removing the requirement for external circuits and components across the mains or elsewhere. Reduction in the number of external components can offer overall product cost savings.
Simplified safety approvals
NBT simplifies safety approval compliance since approval is now restricted to the power transformer. Primary isolation can be easily achieved to all global standards including CE, IEC-601, UL, CSA, etc.
NBT can be combined with other Plitron technologies
NBT transformers can also incorporate combinations of other Plitron transformer innovations.
Plitron's Imin technology reduces inrush currents to the level of the load currents.
Plitrons LoStray technology further reduces magnetic emissions from the power transformer, beyond the already low levels emitted by toroidal transformers.
Plitrons LONO technology effectively eliminates any audible noise in the power transformer regardless of line conditions, including overvoltage.
About Plitron Manufacturing Inc
Plitron Manufacturing Inc was established in 1983, and is a leading manufacturer and designer of toroidal transformers. The company occupies 25,000 square feet and employees 150 people in its Toronto, Canada facility.
Plitron engineers will work hand-in-hand with design engineers at OEM users of transformers to develop NBT toroidal transformer custom transformers optimized to their applications
How NBT works
Plitron Narrow Bandwidth Technology transformers work on the combination of a controlled increase of the internal series inductance and phase cancellation principle. Phase cancellation is obtained by connecting a bifilar winding in contraposition through a capacitor. At low frequencies the capacitor acts as an open switch and allows 50/60 Hz frequency to cross the transformer. At higher frequencies the capacitor becomes active and noise attenuation is obtained. By adjusting the series inductance and the capacitor value, Plitron design engineers can control and optimize the passing bandwidth of the NBT toroidal transformer in the application.
Technical papers available about NBT
Plitron published two technical articles at the Power Quality Conference that describe the development of NBT in September 2001.

Patented technology
A major element of NBT technology has been awarded a US patent # 6, 087, 822 (issued July 11, 2000) entitled "Power Transformer with Internal Differential Mode Cancellation Distortion." Patents are pending in Canada, UK, and Germany.
Plitron developed narrow bandwidth technology (NBT) transformers during a two-year research project.
